Kelantan Trivia

Did you know...

#1. Kelantanese are generally very enterprising. Almost everyone, everywhere here is doing some sort of business! Sometimes, i think, the Malays here are so like the Chinese -- so the business minded. There are food stalls at most roadsides and some even convert their homes into buasinesses -- the dobi, saloons, and restaurants which branch out from houses are a common sight here.

#2. Most Kelantanese Malay (not being a racist here, but so far, ive only encountered Kelantanese Malays =p) look 'bengis' or mighty grumpy at first, but once you break the ice and get to know them better, they are friendly as a cat.

The cause probably lies in the Kelantan people's mindset. They appear to be afraid of outsiders because outsiders seem like aliens to them. So you can imagine, how many eyes are locked on a fairly 'white' fella dressed in bright yellow T-shirt with mata kumbang shades when he walks up to a stall to buy food. =/

#3. The roads in Kota Bahru beats round the bush and every road leads back to where you came from. =S In other words, you can't get lost in KB, but the roads are confusing. Ironic, really. LOL

#4. There are more 7-Elevens in Kuala Terengganu here than in Kota Bahru. I just don't know why.I came in a rush, forgot my shower gel. Went 7-Eleven hunting last night, found one on Jalan Kebun Sultan; Kota Bahru's Chinatown. I was relieved to see Chinese people... AT LAST!! wakakaka

(ps. actually, i do know why. =D A work colleague share with us, that most of the youth in Kelantan has ventured out of the state, while it is opposite in Terengganu. Especially in Kuala Terengganu, most of the youths remain within the state, and lepak here and there. Hence, the many many 7-Elevens in Terengganu to cater for the youths and mat rempits.)

#5. There are alot of mentally and physically challenged people here in Kelantan. On the first day here, i have crossed paths with several of them, some were quite scary; where they would come close and sit near you and just STARE at you. *shirvers*

Luckily ive got those mata kumbang shades to hide my eyes, to help me pretend like im doing work, but im actually syping on them, anticiapting their very next move. Like get ready to run if the pounce on you liddat wan. T_T

That's all for now, stay tuned for more... there's ALOT more.. i can assure you that! LOL

update: as i am writing this, some pak cik wandering around the site came up to the table i was at, looked around, and suddenly reached out and grabbed a bottle of sarsi which was right in front of me! Not actively noticing him before (i was a ware when he wandered nearby), i was jolted from my seat.. abit. haha. Then seeing him in torn and tattered clothing, donning a white kupiah (skullcap), i gave him the drink. I even offered to help him open the bottle. =)

Greetings from the Land of Lighting!

Bet you non-Kelantanese didn't know that name of the north-eastern state of Kelantan also means LAND OF LIGHTNING... XD
Well now you know. All thanks to Wikipedia. Wakiki!!
It's your's truly signing in all the way from Kota Bahru, Kelatan. *smiles*

(i STILL cant believe i managed to 'steal' 'pinjam' someone's WiFi and am now connected to the Net! Been at it since 10am too!! Wahoohoo!)

*sudden realization* But hope 'pinjam-ing' wireless fidelity does NOT violate the Hudud Laws la... haaha

Yesterday, i took a Firefly flight with my bos' wife (its not what it sounds like.. LOL) from Subang to KB, Kelantan. THANK YOU VERY THE SO MUCH Ming for swinging by and wooshing me there. I really really hyper-dilly APPRECIATE IT my friend. wakaka.. inside joke. =P

My flight took off at 2.40pm and i stepped foot on Kelantan soil a good 60 minutes later. KB's airport is named after Sultan Ismail Petra.

On the plane focker (yeap, the propellers wan..), i peered into the open skies and there were so many clouds, i marvelled at God's creation. Flying through the thick and mighty comulonimbuses, i suddenly felt like tasting the clouds~~ Whaaat? You never thought of tasting clouds before meh? Do you know how it tastes like? =/

As the plane was docking, for the first time in my life, i have never heard the pleasant looking and sounding air stewardess scream announce out louder than usual, "Pak Cik, SILA DUDUK! SILA DUDUK!!" Apparently people who disembark the plane in Kota Bahru can become impatient and unruly, and judging from her tone of voice, it has happened before. So, just a precaution for the some 60% of senior citizen on my fligh, i guess. But not so manis lor if liddat. T_T

Got to the event site to look look see see with the whole crew. This time around, SuaRasa 09 KB will be held around the Kota Bahru Stadium area -- a curved car park area; the whole event will be stretched 3/4 way around the outside of the stadium.

Good news for visitors: more booths available. More booths for organizers translate to #$#%$^%&^$#!! LOL

The rest of the day was free and easy. But since i don't want to bore you with my Point A-Point B-Point C account of events here in Kelantan, I shall attempt to post out-of-the-box this time for my experience in Kelantan. =D

...

In the first 4 hours of my arrival, i already ate TWICE. And not the snacky snaky tibbits that kind you know. Not because i was famishly hungry, but there was food almost everywhere, so not to eat was a very difficult thing to do! haha... Ill have a detailed account of what i ate here in Kelantan at the end of the event k? So look out for that. =D

At the rate i'm going, i look forward to put on a few kgs after when i get back to KL. (>.<)

Ive also picked up a few new words already. Ill share about that later, when i know how to SPELL them. ROFELL

One last thing, i came here in quite a rush, and i just realized, i didnt bring my shower get+shampoo. 7 Eleven..........~~~

...

Today is more to warming up the engines. Overseeing the set up and entertaining a few early bird entreprenuers who came to check out their tents. Other than that, it has been eat, sit around, eat, and eat again. But by tomorrow, the hell funn begins!

Since i've been fortunate to steal 'pinjam' someone's WiFi, i was able to get my church work done. It a relieve, really. Getting things done when you're out of KL. =D

And OH! Did i mention i blogged and Facebook-ed too? *grins*

More to come tmr! Stay tuned yahz...

...

ps. sorry, i didnt have a camera this time around; i broke my friend's one last time, so now like dam ohobia ady... T_T

pps. got some pics on my fon, but this dam HP Laptop dv 1000 (which is not mine, but for those of you who rajin, please help me check out) does not seem to have Bluetooth!! Gosh, i suddenly feel im in the Stone Age. XS

ppps. for everyone's sake, the SuaRaosa event is held at paring lots of Kota Bahru Stadium. I am living with two Malaysian uncles in a nearby guest house called Titian Utara IRAMA TIMUR. =/

In case you don't hear from me, you'll know what to do then... XP

Going up North-East

Hello. Its 3.57 am and i am staring at my empty suitcase laying on the floor in the room, right in front of me. I'll be flying to Kelantan Darul Iman, which recently awarded the title Bandaraya Islam or the Islamic City.

I'll be there till Sunday for the second round of SuaRasa 2009 - Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
(sorry, the SuaRasa 2009 - Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu wan oso haven't posted. eeek! >.<)

A quick google on Google (weird. kaka.) revealed much about this North Eastern most state of Malaysia. Here is where PAS is the ruling party. And as such, there is no 'party' allowed. (pun intended. LOL)

Same goes for these:
outright bans on the traditional performance of syncretic Malay theatrical forms, such as Wayang Kulit, Makyong, Dikir Barat, and Main Puteri. PAS also took action to vanish any sculpture that looked like human or animal, modified versions without the traditional references to Hindu dewadewi and traditional Malay hantu. (source Wikipedia)

No parties, no traditional performances, no dewa dewi statues, and best of all, no hantu. OKAY. Got it. Oh, oh.. not to mention, board the bus, eat at restaurant, or go toilet: separate male and females. Hey wait, toilet naturally MUST separate wan mah. Ish. what i tokking... LOL

I will survive this.... (future week seems bleak....)

XD

On a lighter side. I can't wait to taste the local food!! Nasi dagang lah (yummy favorite since T'ganu visit), Nasi Tumpang lah, Nasi Kerbau Kerabu lah, Ayam berGolek lah, Somtam lah (Thai inspired dish), Budu lah, and what ever sumore lah...

Doesn't it just makes your mouth water?! LOL

Kelantan Central Market. (i didn't know they had that. srsly =P)
(source here)

If that's not enough, i'm looking forward to see the locals there. Apparently there's alot of Cambodians, Thais, and mix people in Kelantan. Wootz... who knows, ill even cross paths with a pretty lil lady from Siam.. wakakaka... (cross paths ONLY, nothing else. i wana come back to KL wan okays.... haha). And i hope i get to meet up my UKM frens too! Calling calling them to the event.. wakaka..

And and, i almost forgot, i hope i get to buy some good and cheap afforable kain songkets or the like -- and what ever else Kelantan is famous for. =)

Seeing Kelantan for the first time in a long time (last i went was during my Year 6 so-called expedition to the North =S), would be such a thrilling experience -- i can feel it already! Actually getting to see 1st hand what we have been hearing about Kelantan, about gender segregation, race equality, and even the Islamic run state (Hudud Law! XD) should be interesting, no?

Trying to sepeaking the local languge will be funn too! Cakap will be come kecep and kereta api will be magically transformed to kereta lipang (NO JOKE!! Serious! Because of a train's likeliness to a centipede, hence kereta lipan(g).)

In Kelantan, every word which ends with 'n' will be cordially given an '-ang' or '-g' suffix. Just hope i don't make a blunder and say words that mean the total opposite. T_T

Oh well, wish me luck then. I just hope i don't have to wear a songkok during my stay there. That would SO totally ruin my hairdo. =P And not to mention i'd be sweating like hogs under the blazing sun. LOL

ps. should anyone need to contact me, im just aholler away k?

pps. do keep me in your prayers. thanks!

The pop pop song

While i was surfing the other day, i swung by TinkiTalks' blog and i found this wonderful thing that i MUST share with everyone! Why? Because it'll be injustice to you if i don't share! =P

It's kinda like an interactive advertisement campaign for a T shirt brand named UniQlo Top, hence its acronymn, UT. Its such a brilliant idea and the interactivity is superb!! You must try it yourself. You MUST You MUST You MUST!!! Click on the small link on the ad.

At UT's homepage, you can WATCH, VOTE, and CREATE your very own UT Loop! They have a variety of sound effects to choose from and you can mix and match them until you get the hang of it and create a masterpiece! This is where YOU can be the maestro and arrange your very own compilation!

This is the promo UT Loop. It will 'loop' with different versions that others have created.

IF you don't like the current set of sound effects, just refresh and you'll get a whole set of new ones! Its THAT simple, anyone can do it... and my advice is, you SHOULD do it!!

Just imagine if this was available back in the old time, there would be countless Beethovens and Mozarts around today.. LOL

Now have a watch at my UT Loop =)

So? Did you like it? =D

Don't you SO like it?! Esp the kiss kiss part? wahahaha. Me too. =$

And oh, oh... would you please VOTE for my UT Loop? please..? pretty please? LOL. Not like its a competition or what right? Just vote lah for funn! =D

...

What you waiting for? Click www.uniqlo.com/utloop/ to make your very own UT Loop

or

UniQlo Top if you're keen to purchase or know more about the superb tees. =D

ps. you may want to keep an eye on how many windows or programs you are running at the time when you are trying to create your UT Loop. It runs on Flash, so it may cause other programs to slow down some what. Have funn!! XD

Susan Boyle's Got Talent

Hi all, have you heard of this lady named Susan Boyle?

You should have, you must have. She's the latest act on Britian's Got Talent who blew the judges, the crowd, and everyone watching at home... away!! Susan is 47+, unemployed, and has quite a peculiar outlook -- thick eye brows, frizzy hair, and speaks in a squeaky voice. Still, she has touched the hearts of many by her rendition of the song 'I dreamed a dream' from Les Miserables.

You can see from the video, almost everyone had a here-we-go-again look on their faces when they first saw Susan Boyle come on stage. They even giggled when she said she wanted to be a professional singer and an aspiring Elain Paige to be when asked by the judges. Still she remained unfazed. She put everyone to shame when her angelic voice serenaded the audience!!

Never underestimate what someone is made of just because of their outward appearance. So don't think if Marcus Tan goes to Mid Valley wearing shorts and tshirt, he cannot a millionaire! =D

Simply spectacular! Enjoy...

Just loved seeing the judges, ESPECIALLY Simon Cowell raise his eye brows in amazement! =D

Judge Amanda couldn't have worded it better when she said in her comment, "I'm so thrilled because i know that everybody was against you... I honestly think that we were all being very cynical and... I think that's the biggest wake up call ever... And i just want to say that i was a complete privilege listening to that... [it was inspirational...]"

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high,
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.

Then I was young and unafraid
When dreams were made and used,
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung,
No wine untasted.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame.

And still I dream he'll come to me
And we will live our lives together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seems
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.
IF the video takes like forever to load (which i THINK i will, watch it here instead. YouTube! $@%^&*%$#@!@%^ for disabling embedding by request!! Sheehe!!
Susan Boyle - Britan's Got Talent 2009

ps. she even has fan sites up already (like THIS one), considering she just made it big like a week ago! Whao!

pps. watching the whole video, seeing the judge's expressions, plus the superbly moving music playing until the end, makes it a very humbling viewing experience.

omg.. Im so emo nw.

OMG people..! I stand corrected. Ydy WASNT as funn as i hv hoped for it to be..

It was totaly the opposite. NOT FUNN.

And EMO-FYING too! Gaaaaah!

Heres the break down:

#1. Dam high spirited lo, got2xtion paintbal park bkt jalil at 745am. Taylors team late set up. WAIT. MY teammates, who sapos2b there at 800am (as prevsly agreed), late melate. WAIT. Tings got pretty delayed afta regstration, all participants made2line up like sch kids in the freaking hot morning sun! (i oso duno y i lined up) WAIT. Captains briefing pulak took like4ever. The guy repeated the same ting THREE times cz people were late, etc.. Malaysians. Gheeze.

Then, afta waiting almost like 4ever, our turn2play. Much anticipated, we LOST. It happened so fast, i didnt believe it! Ahh.. DONT evn get me started on the game play. OMG.

#2. Headed bk2st john for family day wit buddy bryan lyt. Got stuck in gila jam along Jln Telekom. Parked half way, goodbye RM6. Walked up2sch, saw MANY parking lots. >_<

I blame CBN for being so deep in the huthan that almost EVRY girl mz b drove in n dropped at the door step, all cautious of a school of "monkeys" nearby. (xcuse the english simpulan bahasa, pun intended. Woots!)

Met up ALOT of ppl, had quite a blast too! Perhaps the best part of the day! =p

Thn as i ws leaving4kendo, i witnessed 1st hand, a real FIGHT! Apparently, sum mat rempit punched an sji kid for (wil nt reveal here, wana kno,ask me.haa). Then the whole sch got into a frenzy, which had Mr David, Pn Najibah, n Johannaians sprawling into the street until AIA's gate. Police came 15mins later (nt so quick, if ud ask me), then show ended.

A sad day4youths nowdays, really. Haih. Emo again.

#3. Then went4kendo, it rained! #€@%!! And careless me accidentaly dented a car while parking! €%#@!! Emo-ed all thru training >_< Left a note n contact4the owner though. =/

#4. Like rubbing natrium cholride to the wound, my fren msgd me pulling out frm evnt job on23rd. Now duno wan find replacement frm under which rock. Haih. Bt God willing, i will. =)

#5. Altho i slept at10.30pm ydy (ikno..vr early! surprised myself too! =p), my whole body aching today. Joints pain all over making me vr quite unproductive. Signs of aging. Sigh. =D

#6. As of2.30pm today, im to put fairly imaginative tshirt designs into reality in AI. Kinda to 'help out' for a youth initiative in church. Pray hard my lappy DOESNT go whacky! XP

#7. And the grand finale of my EMO factor is a gargantuan ulcer on my lower lip, outside on left side. Not bcz im too hawt (heaty), bt bcz my dear sister dcided2try her 'shadow hand swing' in the car the other day,n yours truly didnt see it coming. WHAM!

Gargantuan means the size of Godzilla's distant cousin. Jokes aside, whn my lips dry, its painful. Eating has never been this excruciating. Its so big, it hurts whn i talk. So i talk less. Which is nothing short of torture4a chatter box like me! Gaah! I resort2sign language instead. =)

...

Hows that for 'funn day'? More like code name for suckier day to me. Oh wel, evryting happens4a reason -- i jz dont know what it is.. Yet. Haa.

Cant wait to b me again! =D

So wana stretch like tis:

Ppps. As a result, hd to diligently RETYPE AFTA PARAGRAPHS #2. three freaking times! Gaaah!

Pppps. Sory cudnt colourize fonts or play wit formatting. Pic ws edited+resized via fon tho.. Coolness!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

FYI, i was on that dunking machine during my Family Day back in 2004, the Centenary Year! Dam funn wei, people who "hated" me in school lined up SO LONG just to dunk me. Sad to say, many succeed. LOL.

Water was great on a hot day, but i wasn't the only dunk-ee, so it kinda got murky and dirty with other dunk-ee's bodily secretion. Yuck. Remember getteing sick the next day. =S

Aaahh, those were the days. Hope tomorrow is better than the last. =D

Hopefully, if time permits, will swing by kendo traiing at Japan Club of KL, Taman Seputeh, 4pm - 6pm. I so *heart* kendo!! Whooo!

I wana go Redang!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I got this lovely postcard from a mysterious sender. No name, no contact number, no return to address -- the only indication of where it came from was the postage stamp. LOL

And it read: BANGI, SELANGOR D.E.

Behind it was a few printed lines describing Redang Island and just my home address and this message: - DUDE! NJOY K -

Either ask me to enjoy the island or enjoy looking at the postcard. LOL

In any case, ive been trying very hard to figure out who the mysterious sender is. I nearly cracked my head, i could hardly phantom anyone. Hence, this is a gesture of thanks and gratitude for sending me the postcard!

Who ever your are, you are very thoughtful, THANK YOU. Now im more active in planning for my Redang trip. =)

Now, does anyone out there wish to send me flight tickets to Redang Island or complimentary accommodation coupons? LOL

Grave Cleaning

Its that time of the year again folks -- Qing Ming!!

Sometime in April of every year, the Chinese will visit the graves of their dearly departed to perform some prayers as well as 'spring clean' their ancestral tombs. It is a Chinese tradition which goes a long way back, a tradition kept as a symbol of respect and remembrance of relatives who has passed on. Its the Chinese version of All Souls Day.

Being a Christian, i do not keep with Chinese beliefs. However, when my 75 year old grand aunty asked if i could accompany her to Qing Ming for her late husband's tomb one Saturday before the real day, i could not turn her down. It was exactly one week passed from today.

I bunked in her house the night before. Having my Mommy passed on, i missed the care of a mother. My grand aunty treated me like her son as her only daugther is away in the UK. We went out for Western dinner, and she made me a cup of Milo before bed. It was a lovely evening.

She even woke me up like a mother would -- call you, then give you five minutes of snooze time, then call you again. I finally dragged myself to the toilet at 6.30am. We left the house at sunrise, after sharing a cup of warm drinks.

We made our way thru the labyrinth of decade old tombs, climbing over and walking across them with a sense of respect for thing of the afterworld. We located the tomb after a few wrong turns and began cleaning it up. We employed a grave's keeper who was wandering around the area to tidy up the tomb -- you know, cut grass, make it all spic and span again. I, of course, was the diligent supervisor. LOL
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
The 'gift box' on fire. The smoke behind the tombstone are from the jossticks i stuck on the ground.
Alot heh? :-D

Meanwhile, grand aunty was busy setting up prayer things all around and i help spread white paper around the grave and stuck jossticks on the graves, and the other graves surrounding my grand uncle's. After saying a prayer, she set the 'gift box', as i would call it, aflame. We sat on neighbouring tombs while it burned.

Curious, i enquired what were in them. She said there were clothing, shoes, a Visa card (yes... a VISA CARD!), and of course, hell notes. All to be burned for grand uncle. And THATS why its a 'gift box'. =D

All around us, there also other families who came for Qing Ming. Like this one here.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Qing Ming: A family affair.

I think there were THREE generations here: parents, children, and grandchildren. LOL. They had more 'goodies' for their dearly beloved. I guess the more the merrier? :-)

The white paper which i laid all over the tomb -- apparently they had them too, only more and in better quality because got silver lining and writing on them sumore! The dead these days i tell you, EVEN LUCKIER THAN the living! gheeze.

People who can afford more, gives more to their deceased relatives. Its becoming so commercialized these days, the shops sell anything and everything from the latest paper handphones to the coolest sports car. And people STILL buy them and burn them to ashes, believing that their dearly beloved will receive them in heaven -- or hell, depending on where they are. =/

There were also grave keepers who were around who were not only offering cleaning services, no, they were selling FIRECRACKERS!! 8 feet ones sumore!! (NOW i know where to get them explosives!! XD)
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
The big bang going off on a tomb not too far away from where we sat.

Anyhow, it was a nice experience for me. Having to accompany my grand aunty and see how she performs Qing Ming and all. Well, im not sure if i would have another chance next year, but i hope i get to to it again, IF her heath permits.

Before leaving, she told me, "When i cannot come for Qing Ming anymore, you please come and visit this grave, okay? I know you are Christian, but just put flowers, that would be enough."

How can i not compy, after all the years that she's taken care of my sister and i?

I would, without a doubt, i would.

ps. all photos in this post taken by a Nokia 6120's 2MP camphone. Chun leh? XD

I changed a small part of the world

Remember me saying in the previous post that we all have the power to change the world, in our very own little ways? Well, today i was able to change a small part of the world. Yeap, i helped changed someone's world today. And its a pretty good feeling too! :-)

Some time ago, i tried out this Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) dance-arcade thinggie with my sister and shared the experience with Zach. So coincident that, he happened to also love DDR and played ALOT of it while he was younger.

So i thought, today why not take him out for a dance session in Jusco Wangsa Maju? Since he lives nearby and rarely goes out anyway... (public transport at our part of home is somewhat troublesome. LOL) And so we went, after having some superb-licious chicken-char siew-rice in Taman Bunga Raya for lunch. We were in luck today as we got there at at about 11.30 am and there wasn't a long line of people -- the usual lunch crowd. :p

...

Zach was a pro on them steps of the DDR machine. Of course, i felt a certain obligation to dance along side him, but i guess you'd figure out by now that i have two left feet! Still, i gave up a good fight and danced as best as i could, to all the songs that he selected -- however insanely fast tempo-ed and crazy stepped they were... LOL

Third song in, i was already getting the hang of it (but still scored a modest D while he got B) but we began to sweat like dogs really sweaty people. :P

Oh, you should have seen him on the ParaParaParadise (PPP -- what kinda names they come up with.. sheesh! @_@) machine!! LOL. JUST LIKE THE MODEL DANCING ON THE SCREEN. Terra. Haha.

One thing's for sure, Zach is self-expressive -- given the proper situation and company, of course. On the way home, he shares with me that he is absolutely petrified to do play the PPP at people-packed arcades! Guess we need more practice and exposure now, don't we? LOL
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Yay! I got high score! LOL
Note: this is genuine. not picture posing.
Correction: picture has been edited as the subject wishes. His smile is STILL genuine =D

The happy Zachboy keying in his name into the high score board of PPP. In the foreground is the DDR machine. Can you see how he is gleaming with joy? LOL

Its a nice feeling to see a friend smile. To know you can a friend smile is a wonderful feeling. Everyone should experience moments like these in their lives. It is the very small moments like these that makes life worth living.

KNOWING that you can make a difference, big or small. Then make it.

Zach, went home happier than before he met me today. And that was a difference. In fact, he was so happy and uplifted after that dance session on the DDR, he went home and continued dancing to the moves of Beyonce's Single Ladies. =D

Look out for my source of inspiration to make a difference in the posts to come... :-)

ps. From the prev post, do share, "What would you do in your special way to change the world?"
