Kelantan Trivia

Did you know...

#1. Kelantanese are generally very enterprising. Almost everyone, everywhere here is doing some sort of business! Sometimes, i think, the Malays here are so like the Chinese -- so the business minded. There are food stalls at most roadsides and some even convert their homes into buasinesses -- the dobi, saloons, and restaurants which branch out from houses are a common sight here.

#2. Most Kelantanese Malay (not being a racist here,but so far, ive only encountered Kelantanese Malays =p) look 'bengis' or mighty grumpy at first, but once you break the ice and get to know them better, they are friendly as a cat.

The cause probably lies in the Kelantan people's mindset. They appear to be afraid of outsiders because outsiders seem like aliens to them. So you can imagine, how many eyes are locked on a fairly 'white' fella dressed in bright yellow T-shirt with mata kumbang shades when he walks up to a stall to buy food. =/

#3. The roads in Kota Bahru beats round the bush and every road leads back to where you came from. =S In other words, you can't get lost in KB, but the roads are confusing. Ironic, really. LOL

#4. There are more 7-Elevens in Kuala Terengganu here than in Kota Bahru. I just don't know why.I came in a rush, forgot my shower gel. Went 7-Eleven hunting last night, found one on Jalan Kebun Sultan; Kota Bahru's Chinatown. I was relieved to see Chinese people... AT LAST!! wakakaka

(ps. actually, i do know why. =D A work colleague share with us, that most of the youth in Kelantan has ventured out of the state, while it is opposite in Terengganu. Especially in Kuala Terengganu, most of the youths remain within the state, and lepak here and there. Hence, the many many 7-Elevens in Terengganu to cater for the youths and mat rempits.)

#5. There are alot of mentally and physically challenged people here in Kelantan. On the first day here, i have crossed paths with several of them, some were quite scary; where they would come close and sit near you and just STARE at you. *shirvers*

Luckily ive got those mata kumbang shades to hide my eyes, to help me pretend like im doing work, but im actually syping on them, anticiapting their very next move. Like get ready to run if the pounce on you liddat wan. T_T

update: as i am writing this, some pak cik wandering around the site came up to the table i was at, looked around, and suddenly reached out and grabbed a bottle of sarsi which was right in front of me! Not actively noticing him before (i was a ware when he wandered nearby), i was jolted from my seat.. abit. haha. Then seeing him in torn and tattered clothing, donning a white kupiah (skullcap), i gave him the drink. I even offered to help him open the bottle. =)
